July 2009 Spotlight: Anand Narayanan

Narayanan, AAnand Narayanan, a grad student in the Lekven Lab was recognized for his involvement in student activities and student life at Texas A&M with the Buck Weirus Spirit Award. Only five graduate students were selected for this award in 2009. Anand Narayanan is currently serving as the President of Biology Graduate Student Association.

The Association of Former Students presents the Buck Weirus Spirit Award annually to students for their involvement and contributions to creating positive experiences for the Aggie community, and for the impact they have on student life and enhancing the Aggie spirit. According to the Association’s website, “Unlike other awards, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award recognizes those students who make contributions to the University through participation in student organizations, Aggie traditions and University events.”

During the parent’s day weekend, Anand Narayanan also received the Who’s Who among students in American Universities and Colleges, a national recognition for scholastic achievements and outstanding campus leadership. The names were shortlisted by Division of Student Affairs at Texas A&M University. 11 graduate students won the award this year.

Anand Narayanan has also served in several other leadership positions in University Apartments administration. The University Apartments, run by the Department of Residence Life, houses over 750 residents from 62 countries. Anand has served as a representative for University Apartments in the Graduate Student Council. He organized two collection drives in University Apartments, the proceeds were donated to Twin City Mission and victims of Hurricane Ike. For his efforts in highlighting the cultural diversity, Anand Narayanan was awarded the Diversity Service Award by the Department of Multicultural Services. He was the only student who received the award this year. The award ceremony is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President of Diversity, the Department of Multicultural Services, the Department of Disability Services, Aggie Allies and Student Government Association Diversity Commission.
