Frequently Asked Questions - General Information
50. I don't want to stay in biology, but don't
know what degree program I should enter. What should I do?
What are your interests? (business, engineering, etc.). For more assistance
go to the Student Counseling Center in room 104
Henderson Hall.
51. How do I find out who my advisor is?
Each student is assigned a faculty member as advisor. This advisor is
listed on the bulletin board outside the Undergraduate Advising Office
(107 Butler Hall)
by the third week of each semester. Students can find their advisor by
simply locating their name on the list; the advisor's name is listed following
the student's name. At the end of the Advisors List is a page listing
the office and telephone numbers of each advisor. Every effort is made
to insure that students retain the same advisor throughout their undergraduate
program, however, changes may be necessary on occasion.
52. What student biological societies are
available?
There are a number of biologically-oriented societies for undergraduates
on the Texas A&M campus. Aggie Optometry Association, Alpha Epsilon
Delta (preprofessional honor society), American Medical Association, Beta
Beta Beta, Black Engineers and Scientists, Cell and Molecular Biology
Association, Future Aggie Physician Assistants, Marine Science Society,
Microbiology Society, Multicultural Association of Pre-Health Aggies,
Society of Conservation Biology, Pre-Medical Society, Pre-Dental Society,
Pre-Pharmacy Society, Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists,
and the Zoological Society.
Students may obtain the name of the Faculty Advisors for these groups
from the Undergraduate Advising Office. Fliers for these groups are also
posted in the Undergraduate Advising Office.
53. What departmental scholarships are available?
A scholarship for a Junior or Senior Botany major is available (information
can be obtained from the Undergraduate Advising Office.
54. What courses can I "test out" of?
A complete listing of these courses can be obtained from the Advising
Office.
55. Who signs the request for testing out
of a course?
These requests (petitions) are signed by an undergraduate advisor, either
Dr. Scott or Dr. Owens. Some departments (such as Modern Language) have
their own forms; others are initiated from the Undergraduate Advising
Office.
56. What do I do if I have a disagreement
with a professor?
If the professor is a faculty member in the Department of Biology, the
student should first speak with an undergraduate advisor (call 845-3116).
If the faculty member is in another department, the student should go
to the advising office of the department offering the course.
57. Is there a course I can substitute for
ENGL 301?
You may substitute ENGL 210 but you must have 36 hours of 300- or 400-level
courses. If you need ENGL 301 as part of this requirement, you should
take ENGL 301.
